William Newbrander Named USAID/BASICS Technical Director
April 21, 2008—USAID/BASICS is pleased to announce the appointment of William “Bill” Newbrander as Technical Director. In this position, he will supervise the project’s technical focus areas, including: pneumonia, diarrheal diseases, healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy, malaria, nutrition for children and infants, newborn survival and health, and pediatric HIV/AIDS.

USAID/BASICS Establishes Long-term Technical Assistance Program in Liberia
February 29, 2008—USAID/BASICS has commenced a 21-month technical assistance agreement with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Liberia to support introduction of the country’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS). The Government is aiming to ensure that at least 70% of health facilities are providing the BPHS by 2010, and is further seeking a five percent reduction in the child mortality and maternal mortality rates by the same time.

- Community Consultation on Child Health Practices in Timor-Leste This report provides results from a 2007 consultation conducted by the Timor-Leste Integrated Maternal and Child Health Care Project (jointly implemented by USAID/BASICS and USAID/IMMUNIZATIONbasics) to learn more about key preventive and care-seeking health practices related to child health.
